Achill Island is Irelands largest Island. Situated of the West coast of county Mayo, Achill is perfectly situated to get the best of the wind and waves straight in off the Atlantic Ocean. Achill is practically on the edge of Europe.
Learning to windsurf in Achill you will be in an area of outstanding beauty with breath taking scenery all around you. The water quality is excellent and the Island also boasts 5 blue flag beaches, all of which are excellent windsurfing locations.
The Lake at Keel on Achill Island is the perfect location in which to learn to windsurf. The lake is situated only a few hundred meters from the beach at Keel.
Summer time windsurfing on Achill produces more days of consistent planning conditions than anywhere else in Ireland. Due to the gap between the hills, which you can see in the picture to the left the wind funnels across the lake and on warmer days we get a cool wind falling from the mountain which joins the prevailing wind to give planning conditions through the warmer part of the day. This makes for perfect freestyle conditions and perfect for teaching as the lake remains relatively flat.
